GLOSSARY

TROUBLE BUDDY

A trouble buddy is an individual who keeps tabs on you for mental health reasons. It is a consensual agreement between yourself and a willing party to keep checking on each other. They help keep you safe, especially when you are a danger to yourself. They also help by staying by your side through the hard days.

These are activities one does to bring them back to the present. They help to calm down panic/anxiety attacks, breakdowns, depressive episodes etc. They vary in time intensity, depending on what is most practical.

SELF-CARE TECHNIQUES

These are activities done to show kindness to one's self. They remind one to pause and give back to themselves.

COMPULSIVE THOUGHTS

These are behaviors that cause one to do an action repeatedly until the feelings of anxiety pass. For example,

  • Checking the door repeatedly to make sure it’s locked

  • Rearranging things until they feel just right

IMPULSIVE THOUGHTS

These are behaviors done without forethought and regard for consequences. For example,

  • Engaging in sexual activity with someone we wouldn’t if we stopped to think things through

  • Buying something expensive that we don’t really need or can’t really afford, without having planned it

SELF-HARM/ HARMFUL OBJECTS

The act of causing bodily harm to one's self consciously. For example,

  • cutting using a sharp object (blade, knife, glass etc)

  • starvation (deliberately missing meals)

  • pulling one's hair (destroying the scalp by yanking hair out)

  • burning (using a flame, acid or corrosive material)

MANAGING

This is the process of controlling one's symptoms without using medical means, but ultimately in a healthy way.
